RAP, or Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement, is a key element in sustainable road construction. At Ferro Asphalt, RAP is stockpiled and carefully processed to create a valuable resource for road reconstruction and resurfacing projects.
What is RAP?
RAP is a recycled material derived from old asphalt pavement. Instead of being
discarded, this material is collected, crushed, and mixed with aggregates to create a
sustainable road surface.
How is RAP Stockpiled at Ferro Asphalt Plant?
At the Ferro Asphalt Plant, RAP is meticulously collected and stored in designated stockpiles. The process begins with the removal of old asphalt from roads, which is then transported to our plant. Here, the asphalt is crushed into smaller, usable sizes (“gradations”) for use in new Hot Mix Asphalt (“HMA”). This ensures that the recycled material is high quality and ready to be integrated into HMA.
How is RAP Used?
RAP is mixed with Aggregates, Sand, and Liquid Asphalt at our plant to create a HMA that meets performance requirements. This mix is then used to reconstruct and resurface roads, offering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional paving methods. By incorporating RAP, we are able to maintain the structural integrity and performance of the pavement while significantly reducing the need for virgin materials.
Why Is RAP Sustainable?
Using RAP reduces the need for quarried aggregates and lowers the Liquid Asphalt content of our HMA, which conserves natural resources and reduces energy consumption. Additionally, it decreases the amount of waste sent to landfills, contributing to a cleaner environment! The recycling process itself also requires less energy compared to producing virgin Hot Mix Asphalt, further lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
Our Gencor 600 UltraPlant is among the most efficient, environmentally clean, and lowest maintenance designs available to the Hot Mix Asphalt Industry.
Ferro Asphalt utilizes RAP in multiple mix designs, resulting in reduced costs, enhanced performance, and a reduced environmental impact.
Benefits for Taxpayers and Communities:
- Cost-Effective: Incorporating RAP in road reconstruction and resurfacing projects can lead to significant cost savings for taxpayers and municipalities.
- Environmental Impact: By using RAP, communities can reduce their carbon footprint and promote sustainable practices.
- Durability: RAP blends are known for their durability, resulting in longer-lasting roads and reduced maintenance costs.
