Project Overview

In 2024–2025, PT Ferro served as the prime contractor for the Old Town North Roadway Reconstruction project, located in the heart of Plainfield’s historic district. This multi-phase infrastructure improvement was designed to modernize aging roadways and underground utilities while preserving the charm and walkability that make Old Town North a cornerstone of the community.

Unlike standard roadway jobs, this project required careful coordination, thoughtful sequencing, and constant communication with the Village of Plainfield, residents, and local businesses.

Project Partners

A key component of the project’s success was the close collaboration between PT Ferro, the Plainfield Public Works & Engineering Department, and the Village’s consulting engineer, Baxter & Woodman, Inc. From planning through construction, their teams provided oversight, technical expertise, and coordination that ensured the work met both current infrastructure standards and the Village’s long-term vision for Old Town North.

Together, this partnership allowed complex utility replacements, roadway reconstruction, and streetscape improvements to move forward efficiently while maintaining safety, quality, and respect for the surrounding historic neighborhood. The result is infrastructure designed not only to perform today, but to serve the community reliably for decades to come.

Life Happening Around the Work

Because the work took place in an established historic neighborhood, maintaining access to homes, sidewalks, and local traffic routes remained a priority throughout every phase of construction. Work was carefully phased to accommodate residents, pedestrians, and local traffic, ensuring the neighborhood remained safe, accessible, and functional while long-term infrastructure upgrades were completed.|

Replacement of Underground Utilities

Beneath the surface, aging underground utilities were replaced to support the neighborhood’s long-term infrastructure needs. Water and sewer systems were upgraded, along with improvements to drainage, helping reduce pooling and runoff issues that had affected the area in the past. While much of this work is invisible once completed, it plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability and longevity of the roadway above.

New Sidewalks, Curbs, and Accessibility Improvements

To preserve the character of Plainfield’s historic district, historic-style lighting and complementary streetscape elements were incorporated into the design. These features were selected intentionally to align with the architectural character of Old Town North, blending modern infrastructure improvements with the neighborhood’s established aesthetic. The result is a streetscape that feels both refreshed and familiar.

Plainfield’s Mayor John Argoudelis has highlighted the Village’s commitment to strategic infrastructure investment, noting that the community has invested more than $30 million in road improvements over the past five years and plans to continue this level of investment moving forward.

Why It Mattered

This project was about balancing modern infrastructure needs with Plainfield’s vision for maintaining its small-town charm. Safer streets, improved drainage, and enhanced walkability contribute to a stronger sense of place and help revitalize one of the Village’s most beloved areas. The improvements made will support the community’s quality of life for years to come.

PT Ferro was proud to support the Plainfield community through the successful delivery of this important infrastructure project.
